Traffic Monitoring System Helps West Java Province Reduce Congestion and Improve Safety
Highlights
- The analytics dashboard also detects the number and type of vehicles on the road at a given time and uses Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) to store CCTV footage and images
- Elitery helped the Provincial Government of West Java to improve traffic monitoring and enforcement by installing four CCTV cameras that are connected to a dashboard in Amazon QuickSight.
- The SiPANON monitoring system has been a success in helping the Provincial Government of West Java to improve traffic monitoring and enforcement.
Challenge
The Provincial Government of West Java faced a challenge in monitoring and enforcing traffic. Traffic problems usually grow faster than the efforts to solve transportation problems, which can lead to a worsening of the problems over time. Therefore, an effective solution is needed to handle traffic problems and violations.
Solution
Before the SiPANON monitoring system was implemented, the Provincial Government of West Java did not have a clear picture of what was happening on the roads. With 5,312 villages spread out, it was almost impossible for the government to manage all the roads and busy areas with traffic officers. But now, they can monitor live feeds from the main intersections and act almost in real-time to address traffic congestion.
Benefits
After receiving alerts from the system that identifies traffic problems, operators can make announcements using loudspeakers that are placed near the cameras or send work tickets to traffic officers near the problem location. Additionally, the analytics dashboard in SiPANON helps to determine the rules of the traffic monitoring and analytics system, such as when to schedule road repairs and on what days vehicles with odd-numbered license plates can drive. The Transportation Department can better plan regular road maintenance when the Transportation Department knows which roads have the heaviest traffic.
